VICTORY DAY 2024
On the day of the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze and Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili laid wreaths at the bust of Meliton Kantaria in Kikvidze Park and congratulated veterans of World War II. There are 74 World War II veterans living in Georgia.
Festive events took place in different cities of Georgia. The Georgian-Russian Center named after E.M. Primakov celebrated Victory Day in the homeland of Meliton Kantaria.
Dmitry Lortkipanidze, the head of the Georgian-Russian Center named after E.M. Primakov, in particular, noted: “We congratulate the public of Georgia on the Day of Victory over the world evil - fascism! On this holiday we came to the Tsalenjikha region in the village of Jvari, where the grave of the hero of the Soviet Union is located, Meliton Kantaria, who, together with his colleague Egorov, hoisted the Banner of Victory over the Reichstag in Berlin, thereby immortalizing this day in the memory of millions! Political Secretary of the Solidarity for Peace party Temur Pipia, together with representatives of the Socialist Platform of Georgia, laid flowers at the bust of Meliton Kantaria in the capital’s Kikvidze Park, Kikvidze Park, where WWII veterans were honored on May 9, was crowded. “Hundreds of Tbilisi residents came to the park. We must preserve traditions and restore friendly relations between the peoples of Georgia and Russia,” noted Temur Pipia.
According to the Georgian politician, there is a danger of restoration of the pro-fascist regime. At the same time, the Socialist Platform issued a statement calling on the Georgian government to act decisively and prevent a violent coup in the country: “Watching the developing processes, it becomes obvious that an unconstitutional violent coup is being prepared! And in the event of a violent change of power, the existing fairly democratic governance will be severely curtailed.”
On May 9, residents of Senaki, under the leadership of human rights activist, head of the “Union of Russian Compatriots” Larisa Agabalayeva, visited a military burial ground in Mendzhi. They laid flowers at the memorial where Soviet soldiers who were treated at the Menji military hospital during the Great Patriotic War are buried. In a conversation with us, Larisa Agabalaeva noted that she has long been trying to attract the attention of relevant public organizations and not only to the issue of restoration work: “Unfortunately, few people visit the memorial. Whenever possible, only members of our organization come. I am a former soldier, and members of my family also served in the Fighter Regiment. For many years I have been trying to attract the attention of relevant public organizations and not only to the issue of restoration work.”
